Mainland vs. Freezone
When setting up in Dubai, you'll choose between two main structures: Mainland and Freezone. Mainland companies can trade locally and internationally within the UAE and bid for government contracts, but they require a physical office and have higher setup costs. Freezone companies are ideal for internationally focused entrepreneurs thanks to lower costs, simpler bureaucracy and 100% foreign ownership. The right structure depends on your target market, activity and budget.
- Can trade both locally and internationally.
- Physical office is mandatory.
- Can bid for government contracts.
- Higher setup costs and more complex legal requirements — better suited for large or specialized activities.
- International trade only (local trade can be done through a distributor).
- No physical office requirement — Flexi-desk or virtual office is accepted.
- Cannot bid for local government contracts.
- Subject to free-zone authority rules, so bureaucracy is much simpler and faster.
- Setup and renewal costs are significantly lower than Mainland companies.
